aspects of the entertainments business will also be taught, as will be coping with the emotional lifestyle of success and rejection. "These are the things that nobody seems to touch upon," says Mark, "and I'm anxious that our schools should open the students' eyes to what's beyond fame."
            Paul is on-the-record as saying that he may host composing or guitar workshops when LIPA opens for business. But this is only one side of the story for he has also agreed to encourage other artists and colleagues to pass on their skills to students, and is 'lead patron', which means that he will contribute financially and also spearhead the £l2m fundraising campaign.
            In fact, Paul has already started doing so, and with immediate success. He appeared in a short video recently presented by Liverpool City Council in its bid for the £350m City Challenge scheme launched by the Department of the Environment, and Liverpool went on to win a £38m share of this, to be used to regenerate the eastern part of the city, in which LIPA is located.
            To back the bid further, Paul personally escorted the minister for inner cities, Michael Portillo MP, around the Institute a few hours before the Oratorio premiere, in June, pointing out places from the past and his hopes for the future and charming him with his (always said, now proven!) winning smile.
            "The reaction to all of this in Liverpool is very warm," reports Mark Featherstone-Witty. "The people are very excited. They can't wait for the venture to start. It's going to be a very exciting time for all of us."
