CUFF-LINK

What does Paul have in common with Bob Dylan and Julie Andrews? No, not the movies: the answer is rooted in a Cuff Link item from CS47/48. There was clearly more than Yuletide spirit to Paul's collaboration with Johnny Cash and Tom T. Hall (writer of 'Harper Valley PTA'). The result, 'New Moon Over Jamaica', will be on Johnny's next album in September or thereabouts and our Paul will be singing it with him - Bob and Julie have previously duetted with JC.. .Some years ago the Pink Floyd toyed with making an album without musical instruments, using cutlery, garden tools etc. No doubt they'd have made a good fist of it, with their habitual ingenuity. Now Nick Glennie-Smith of Press To Play fame has brought off a similar project as one-third of Gentlemen Without Weapons. But GWW have a purpose beyond breaking boundaries: their album Transmissions (out on A & M) combines the sounds of whales, camels, frogs, apes and Zulu chanting with bouncing squash balls and other man-made noises. The aim is ecological: "We not only tried to make a great record, but one that actually says something," declares Kenny Young, writer of 'Under The Boardwalk. "One acre of rain forest is destroyed every second - an area the size of Great Britain every year". Nick: "...we were determined to make a commercial rock album, not...weird noises for Wildlife on One fans." Aided by that wonder toy the Fairlight, the inherent musicality of these two and Jam producer Vic Coppersmith-Heaven must give them a fighting chance. A second album is already under way, such is the material gathered from field trips to Bali, Indonesia and Hawaii. Part of the royalties goes to a GWW trust fund, for channelling to "animal and environ-' mental charities". Vic: "Music is the most powerful force on earth... and where we lead others may follow." Hear hear...
This chimes in with Paul and Linda's involvement with Greenpeace (see Sue's Letter) and Lynx, the anti-fur trade pressure group. Linda is working with Lynx on the 1989 MPL calendar...Still with Linda: she'll feature in Nocon on Photography, a Thames TV series to be shown this autumn. Gene Nocon took the snap of Andy and Fergie that was used on a stamp; Linda has known Gene a long time...Talking of stamps, West Germany issued a 'Rock 'n Roll Idols' set of four, comprised of Elvis, John Lennon, Buddy Holly and Jim Morrison. (No living person can be portrayed, except the head of state; in Britain any Royal is permissible.) The above were chosen by two polls, finishing in that order: the stamps are impressive...Maybe Baby, the recent film about a teenage pregnancy, is another sign that Buddy lives on...The influence of your Sandwich grows apace: who spotted the Radio Times 'US and Us' headline of 16th April, so blatantly lifted from CS40? .. .Talking of which, while on a family visit to Liverpool, Paul and Linda, flush from their cameos in Eat The Rich, filmed brief appearances in BBC1's Bread comedy series. Screening date is not yet known... Thomas Gottschalk of the German TV programme Wetten Dass (see CS47/48) has turned up on British Telecom's tube adverts. Wetten Dass he turned out to be ...Also on the tube, Madame Tussaud's
have cottoned on to 'John Paul, George and Ringo' joke (see Cuff Link last time), picturing waxworks of the Pope and G. and R. in their 1963 suits...Music Week wondered if Paul could negotiate on Heavy Metal's behalf with the Russian authorities, who have condemned it as "an enemy". Well, I suppose he did write 'Helter Skelter'...Veggies rule OK: the good ship Leonid Brezhnev sails on "the first-ever vegetarian cruise" in September, visiting Madeira, the Canaries etc.. Joe Cocker and Wet Wet Wet, the two most famous recorders of 'With A Little Help From My Friends', sang it together at the climax of this year's Prince's Trust Gala at the Royal Albert Hall on 6th June. The B-side of W3's number one single (all proceeds to the Childline charity) is Billy Bragg's 'She's Leaving Home'...Paul's guest appearance (as 'Paul Ramon') on Steve Miller's 'My Dark Hour', playing bass and drums, is semi-legendary. Sandwich ed. saw why when he picked up the Brave New World album (1969) from a market stall. It has bags of drive, recalling early Hendrix, and can be found on The Best of Steve Miller 1968-73 (Capitol EMS 1191)...Steve's publishing was briefly held by Apple; when the latter's disputes with EMI are resolved and the label's non-Beatles catalogue is in the shops again, people will realize how good it was. RKO Films is remembered for King Kong, Top Hat and Citizen Kane, not for its financial mismanagement.. .Interesting quote from Dave Gilmour in Q magazine: "I found it quite amazing doing 'No More Lonely Nights' with Paul McCartney. In one three-hour session with a band we learnt it and we put it down and Paul played piano and sang the lead vocal live, and I put the guitar solo down, bang!".. .The miniature Beatles drum kit in the hologram on HMV's Complete Beatles CD's box, painstakingly built in cahoots with the Ludwig drum company, may be auctioned for charity (possibly Nordoff-Robbins). Let's hope so... EMI's own new complete Beatles boxes (all formats) are due out in October, with Past Masters I & II replacing Rarities. The vinyl versions are digitally remastered for the first time, while the two Past Masters make their debut on record and tape and will eventually be available separately... In our CD/Video Update last time we said 'Goodnight Tonight' was not on CD.
That goes for Britain only: it is of course on the US All The Best CD...George Martin was on his usual wise form on Woman's Hour on 14th July. His book Making Music is reissued and soon to be a TV series. "When it comes to song-writing, I went to Paul McCartney, of course, and got him to do a bit. I went to Paul Simon - it's very interesting, because they write their songs quite differently." Also busy with an all-Welsh Under Milk Wood recorded musical, George had other thoughts to gladden fogeys of all ages: "Music itself doesn't change, no matter what you do to it. On the other hand, people aren't creating as well as they used to, because it's getting too easy...the quality of the song is a matter of your brain. I don't think the writers are thinking enough."...Paul is thinking hard and still working with Hamish Stuart and Chris Whitten, helped by ex-Pretenders guitarist Robbie Mclntosh. Geoff Emerick, engineer from Beatles days, has been involved since April and four songs have been co-produced with Trevor Horn... A first draft script of the full-length Rupert project has been finished, edited by Chris Boucher of Bergerac fame...Look for Paul in BBC's Animation Week, starting 5th September.
He'll talk about Rupert, Seaside Woman, his favourite Tex Avery and the new Luxor Jnr. by John Lassiter. Linda will help to judge a young animators' competition...The doctor says give him bogey music, it seems to make him feel just fine.

No, it's not Paul on the couch - but let reader Matthew A. Jordan of Heathfield, Hertfordshire, introduce his own novel quiz: - Over the years, Paul's song characters have done various deeds. The question names the deed, the object is to name the character in question. The year in question is given after the number of letters.
All of these names are written on the sleeve of one of Paul's albums, either in the song lyrics, or as the song title.
If the answers are correct, there should be the name of a certain ex-member of Johnny and the Moondogs down the centre column. Club Sandwich 49

We have a neat little Wordsearch from Karen, but no surname or address. If she lets us have this info, we can consider using if next time. Thanks.
