LISTEN TO WHAT THE FANS SAID

            • Dear All,
Having just acquired M.T.V., which is a 24 hour rock video cable TV Network here in America, I'm reminded of how and why it all began some fifteen years or so ago. For those of you not old enough to recall, it was the world wide success of the Beatles, who were unable to perform every new single in cities across the globe, that prompted the development of the promotional film clip. Due to some countries broadcast regulations at the time concerning lipsyncing or miming, and the Beatles rapid musical development away from the 3 guitar and drum line up, the clips made no pretence of 'performing the songs live and instead attempted to visualize the songs' themes and music. The first two such revolutionary clips were the 'Strawberry Fields Forever' and 'Penny Lane' films that even by today's standards were fifteen years ahead of their time. The list of milestones in the development of the rock video as an art form and media all its own, has been made much longer by Paul McCartney who continued to produce state of the art videos throughout the 70's and into the 80's. Once again Paul McCartney, you can take the credit as a pioneer this time for your fantastic contributions to video art. Congratulations Paul on what you've made possible for so many other artists.

            • Dear Paul, Linda and Sue,
I just received my 4th edition of 'Club Sandwich' today, and every edition seems bigger and better!
I am fifteen years old and I have been a McCartney fan since, believe it or not, two years of age! I used to watch the Beatles cartoons and sang all the songs. My favorite was 'Yellow Submarine'. I really grew up with the Beatles because they filled the whole household! When I was three or four, I fell in love. The lucky man was Paul McCartney...the cartoon character! I can even remember my childish dreams about this fabulous cartoon hero!
Well Paul, I still love you 200 times more (not the cartoon Paul, of course!). And I must say, you couldn't have chosen a better wife.

            • Dear Paul,
I want to congratulate you on all the awards and honors given you this year. I just love seeing you get the recognition you deserve for consistently writing music of the highest excellence!
I also recently saw the American Video Awards show on TV and was so proud to see you were chosen as the 1st person to be entered in their Hall of Fame. Who else could they have picked? Nobody!
I hope you have a great summer.

            • Dear Paul and Fun Club,
I have never written to Listen to What the Fans Said, and I can't wait longer. I think I'm a very lucky girl in being in this club. I'm renewing my membership and hope to be in this club forever. I was so happy when I received this new issue about 'A Royal Night Out'. Paul, I think you and Linda are very fortunate in meeting Her Majesty The Queen and Prince Philip. What a great honor! I think you must be very proud to be talking with them since they represent your country, and I know that for them it's also a great honor talking with you. Before I forget I want to congratulate you for your new nephew who is a beautiful and healthy baby.
Referring to Linda, I'm sure that her show in Paris must have been a great event. Linda your work was so well done that I'm sure this will increase more opportunities for you in the future. I haven't seen your book 'Photographs' and I'm missing a lot. Paul, you don't know how I would like you to come to Mexico, though here we're having serious economic problems but still have a hope.
Finally, I want to thank you for all the great work you have done. Your new hits are just fantastic! Keep on being the Man with the Golden Reel.

            • Dear Fan Club,
I am writing to thank you for 'Club Sandwich'. It's great to be able to take a break from my law studies, to read each issue and to find out what's being going on over the last few months. New Zealand isn't exactly 'behind the times' - don't let anyone tell you that! — we're right up there with you Britons when it comes to music and fashion (and rugby, netball and cricket, for that matter!). But the one thing that really disappoints me about living in New Zealand is that it's so far away from England that we simply don't get to hear what Paul and Linda have been doing. If I didn't have 'Club Sandwich' I wouldn't know about the awards Paul gets, or the special performances, concerts or celebrations like the 'buddy Holly Week' which are on in England. Since Paul's singles and albums come out here a few months after they have in the U.K. or U.S.A., by reading 'Club Sandwich', I, in fact, get a 'preview' of the latest recording. I always find the issues really interesting and refreshing - your summer issue always brightens up my mid-winter blues!
Thank you all for helping me keep in touch with what the McCartneys and their friends are doing. I feel very privileged to be a part of the Fun Club, a club which I'm sure very few New Zealanders are members of.
Please express my thanks to Paul and Linda for taking such an interest in their fans. Thanks also to Sue and everybody at the Club for working so hard to bring us each superb issue of 'Club Sandwich'.

            • Dear Sue,
Please find enclosed my renewal of membership form, my check for $10 and an international reply coupon.
I must say that I have been very pleased with the 'Club Sandwich'. This is the start of my third year as a member - I wish I could buy life time membership - I will be renewing every year!
Thanks for some very interesting articles of Paul. I do have one regret though. Paul makes us (his fans) wait sooo long for new albums, movies, etc. I realize he takes extra time to make the product perfect - but, I think I can speak for everyone, it drives us crazy waiting! Thank God for the C.S. - at least we can keep in contact with Paul somehow!

An artist is somebody who expresses the confused feelings we all have inside to make it all clear for just one moment.
An artist is somebody who can make you cry and make you smile.
An artist is somebody who can turn deep sadness into sheer happiness just by 'taking a sad song and making it better.'
Dear Paul thank you for being an artist.
            With love,

            • Dear Paul, Linda and Company,
I have to tell you what a wonderful time I've been having with all the marvelous work you have put out in the past year! It's just terrific and so exciting to know that there's much more to come!
Linda, your book 'Photographs' was warm and endearing. You are truly an artist.
My favorite song last year was the superlative 'Ebony and Ivory.' It was the 5th most popular song out of the top 100 in America, although, unfortuntely, it didn't win the 'Best Song' category. The Grammy Award also didn't go to Tug of War' for the 'Best Album', but it has my number 1 vote as the very best. How Paul keeps the fine quality in his music year after year, I just don't know! Such talent deserves to go on for some time to come!
When I heard about 'Give My Regards to Broad Street', I was at once both surprised and delighted! You might like to know that it is already making news, too! The paper reports that 20th Century Fox has acquired the distribution rights already. I can hardly wait for it, and for the new album, too! Thank you, Paul and Linda, for making 1982 and 1983 brighter and happier than I would be if you weren't so hardworking! I love you very much. I hope you (plus Ringo and Barbara) had fun making 'Broad Street', because I'm going to have fun seeing it! Here's hoping that your latest venture on the silver screen is as big a hit as your lovely music has been.
            Please keep the McCartney-magic going!
            Sincerely,
            MARGARET LATTANY

WINGS WORD SEARCH
Try this new puzzle sent in by Fiona Bradshaw.

            Dear Sue,
I decided that I would like to make a contribution towards CLUB SANDWICH, and so I am sending you a copy of a 'Word Search' which I wrote recently. It contains 40 songs, some from Wings' albums and some from Paul McCartney's solo albums. I hope that you will find it enjoyable, and that if you are able to print it in a future edition, other readers will too.

Yours sincerely,
Fiona Bradshaw,
Rugby, Warwickshire.

Answers will be revealed in the next SANDWICH.
