MEET STEPHEN SHRIMPTON
MPL's Managing Director, Stephen Shrimpton, is no longer a new face about the office, having been with the company now since January 1980. Hailing from Melbourne, Stephen lived most of his previous working life in Sydney, where he spent twelve years at EMI Australia, right in the heart of the music business.
Joining EMI in 1969 as the National Sales Manager, he was responsible for launching a successful budget range of pop records. Upon promotion to their National Marketing and Sales Manager, Stephen directed the entire sales and marketing activities of EMI in Australia, including the Wings product.
In April 1974 Stephen became EMI's Managing Director, at the helm of all the company's operations in Australia, with its 600 employees. His work embraced a wide scale of activities from negotiating major label contracts with artists to the manufacturing and distribution of records, music publishing and mail order.
Stephen maintained his personal involvement with Paul McCartney and Wings as Managing Director and during the following six years saw them top the charts with seven No. 1 singles and five No. 1 albums.
Although it was an enormous change in company size for Stephen when he joined MPL with its staff of twelve people, it was in many ways a natural shift into his field of special interest. With his wealth of experience across she breadth of the entertainment business, Stephen slotted neatly into MPL's expanding range of activities from records to films and books. His current projects range from the planning of the proposed video cassette of the successful current movie Rockshow to the worldwide launching plans for Paul's Composer/Artist book, due out in September (except in the U.S. where it has already appeared).
Stephen and his wife and two young sons have settled well into life in England. He finds working with EMI's biggest recording artist constantly challenging and rewarding. He's also brought a breath of fresh Australian air to the Soho based company with his open, direct manner and language peppered with cricket phrases. And he's changed, too. His Liverpudlian accent's getting better all the time!
SUE'S LETTUCE
Hi there, all you clubbers!
It was super that so many of you
Funsters managed to get to London for
the gala opening of the brilliant film
Rockshow, 'cos with Paul and Linda
there, the experience became
unforgettable. The atmosphere was
charged with terrific excitement
waiting for them to arrive at the
Dominion Theatre, and when they
came, they almost got crushed in the
mob along with many of us!
As I'm sure most of you know,
Denny, Steve and Laurence have left
Wings to concentrate on their solo
careers, and I know you'll join me in
wishing them well . . . Meanwhile Paul
and Linda have been continuing work
on the new album (and they say it is
"going great"), but don't get your
hopes up yet 'cos it probably won't be
released til the autumn. But I'm sure
lots of you've got your copies of the
charity album, Concerts for the People
of Kampuchea which was released by
WEA in April. It includes the following
fab tracks by Wings: Got to Get You
Into My Life, Every Night, Coming Up,
Lucille and the Rockestra Theme ... I
see that the Seaside Woman film's
picked up another award. It's the
D&AD Silver Award for the 'Most
Outstanding Promotional Film for a
Record' given at the Designers and Art
Directors Association dinner in London
recently.
Lots of feedback (see back page)
from our last ish. Everyone was truly
moved by our tribute to John. I know
how you'll treasure your copies,
especially when I tell you that as a
special limited edition, there aren't any
more copies left! So you'll have to get
out your irons and smooth out any
creases!
Before I go, I'd like to say once again
how delighted we are with all your
super pix and artwork, some of which
you see in Gallery Corner. Do keep us
supplied with fresh material. It's the
filling for your Sandwich!
'til next time, Sue
SO LONG DENNY
In April, Denny Laine left the band after having been a member of Wings for 10 years. We are all sorry to see him go and wish him all the best for the future. At the moment Paul has no immediate plans to tour and Denny likes live performance so he is hoping to tour on his own with a new band he is forming.
