Your chance to get questions answered

            Q
I recently purchased a picture CD called McCartney In Conversation. It starts in the middle of a conversation and ends rather abruptly. The sound quality is poor also. Can you tell me what this is?
            Maggie Svaling, Winnipeg, Canada

Yes, Maggie - it's a rip off. Owing to a quirk in the copyright law, it is not usually possible for an interviewee - in this case Paul - to prevent the commercial issue of a recorded conversation. So this CD, quite simply, is a recording of an interview or a press conference done by Paul and now released without his permission or the payment of appropriate royalties, even though the sale is trading off his name. Just as bad, CDs such as this can mislead purchasers and cause them to feel duped or ripped off by the artist. Needless to say, no official release would be produced in such a shoddy fashion, so the moral seems to be "stay legal" and you'll be alright.

A couple of months ago I found a double-CD in a record store. It was called Off The Ground: The Complete Works and contained the Off The Ground album plus the B-sides of its singles. Now a friend has found a Flowers In The Dirt double-CD, also with the original album plus some B-sides of the period. Could you give me more information about these? Are there any more of them? How do I get them?
            Angelo Cannavo, Erdal, Norway

No, these are the only double-CDs of Paul's which complement an existing album by adding B-sides and other bonus material from singles on to a separate CD. (The 1993 CD reissue programme The Paul McCartney Collection added bonus material only on the same CD as the main album.) The double-CD of Flowers In The Dirt came out in Japan, with nine tracks included on the second disc. Off The Ground: The Complete Works was released in Germany and added twelve. You might find copies of these through import stores or, presumably, by advertising in collectors' magazines.

            Q
On 28 April I was on holiday in London and decided to visit Abbey Road. After my visit, as I walked away from the studios, who should be walking towards me but Paul. It happened so quickly and I was so startled that when I opened my
mouth to say "Hello" no sound came out. Please can you confirm this sighting ... or was I dreaming?
            Tony McMahon, Harrington Sound, Bermuda

You weren't dreaming, Tony. Paul was at Abbey Road that day, working with George Martin on the imminent Beatles Anthology CDs.

            Q
How many different musical instruments can Paul play?
            Lilly Ekberg, Bullaren, Sweden

That's impossible to say, Lilly - indeed it brings to mind the hypothetical question "How long is a piece of string?" Paul can play most musical instruments to a greater or lesser degree and is particularly adept at picking up and mastering a brand new instrument within minutes of its delivery.
