SUE’S LETTER

This issue contains two themes, one relating to something current and the other to an anniversary. Both draw attention to laudable actions initiated by the music industry in an attempt to alleviate the sufferings of war.
In early September, Paul made a surprise visit to Abbey Road Studios to work with Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher of Oasis, and others, recording a new . version of the Beatles' 'Come Together' for the charity album Help. Other artists featured on the album include Blur, Massive Attack, Portishead, Stone Roses and the Levellers. Production of the album was so hurried that finished copies were in the stores within five days of its recording, and it crashed straight into the chart at number one the very next day! All proceeds are going to the War Child appeal for children caught up in the dreadful conflict in former Yugoslavia, to help relieve their continuing nightmare. We heartily recommend that you buy it.
The related story, unbelievably, marks the tenth anniversary of the Live Aid concerts (see LIVE AID, TEN YEARS AFTER). Why, it only seems like yesterday...
A number of McCartney-linked programmes are on the horizon. Here in the UK we are still eagerly anticipating the airing (details of which are being negotiated) of Paul's radio series Oobu Joobu. Judging from its reception in the US, we'll be in for a real delight. However, the programme most anxiously awaited by all is, of course, The Beatles Anthology. This TV series is set to go out in America on the ABC network on Sunday 19, Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 November, for two hours each night. Here in the UK, ITV is planning to screen the series in five parts, the first (26 November) being two hours long, the others (3, 10, 17 and 24 December) one hour, however these dates "were subject to change at our press time so do please check daily newspapers nearer the time. Look out soon for the Winter Club Sandwich in which we hope to celebrate the Anthology in a special way. Finally, by the time you are reading this, some of you will have caught Paul and Linda's animated appearance on The Simpsons, where vegetarianism becomes an issue for Lisa Simpson.
            Linda's Kitchen,
Linda's fabulous new cookbook, was published in the US and UK on 5 October. All of us here thought that the first book was marvellous, but this new one manages to surpass it both in the range of recipes and in its beautiful production and colour photographs. The book will certainly make a really super present as it's full of tempting, innovative but healthy recipe ideas to suit all lovers of good food.
While on the subject of vegetarianism, our column AND IN THE GREEN CORNER introduces us to Viva! — a new organisation that has entered the campaign against cruelty to animals and also promotes vegetarian issues in general. Also, FROM RUSSIA WITH...A REQUEST presents an unusual plea from a Sandwich reader. Do give it a read and see if there's anything that you can do to help.
Of further interest on the "Green front" is a new video issued by The Vegetarian Society in the UK. With narration by Paul, the 20 minute VHS, Devour The Earth, presents the viewer with graphic proof of the damage done to the balance of nature in the cause of meat production. The video confronts the costs to the environment from the demands on the rain forests, agricultural lands and water table to its links with acid rain and global warming. The video shows how we as individuals can make a difference to these vital problems, and it will make an excellent teaching aid in schools. To obtain a copy, send a cheque or postal order (payable to The Vegetarian Society) for £11.99 (postage included) or £9.99 (special price for members of the Society) to The Merchandising Department, The Vegetarian Society, Parkdale, Dunham Road, Altrincham, Cheshire, WA14 4QG. Readers outside Britain should note that, at present, Devour The Earth is available only in the PAL format and so, in particular, cannot be played on US VCRs. When a NTSC version is available we will let you know. Most European VCRs can play the PAL system however, and anyone outside the UK wishing to buy the video should send a Eurocheque or banker's draft, drawn in Pounds Sterling, for £12.99.
Seeing the piece A LEAF ON PAPER, I am prompted to tell you that Paul's lovely new composition was included in the September playlist of British Airways' long-haul The Classic Choice programme, and was also featured in an hour-long tape on Concorde. So I hope that some of you jet-setters managed to hear the man McCartney up there in the skies, in the company of Bach, Tchaikovsky, Telemann, Mozart, Vivaldi, Wagner, Beethoven and others of that esteemed ilk.
Other features in this Autumn Sandwich include a celebration of the twentieth Buddy Holly Week and a peek at a new film about the Grateful Dead, featuring Linda's photographs and directed by Paul, which will be premiered at the London Film Festival in mid-November.

'til December,
Sue
