WRITE AWAY

Your chance to get questions answered

            Q
My loving Paul's music is twice and thrice limitless but I have a query for Write Away which, if you can answer, I would be delighted ineffably. I read that Paul collaborated with the Meters (Art Neville's band) in the mid-70s. Could you relate about that work?
            Vladimir Boyarchuk, St Petersburg, Russia

Delighted, Vladimir. This famous New Orleans group (they've worked with Fats Domino, Allen Toussaint and scores of other major names) were using Scasaint studio in New Orleans as their base at the time Wings went there - spring 1975 - to record Venus And Mars. As a result, Toussamt ended up playing piano on 'Rock Show' and die Meters appeared on 'My Carnival1, not issued at the time but available now on the Venus And Mars CD.
As a fan of their music, Paul also invited the Meters to perform at a couple of US receptions he threw that year, one of which - on board the Queen Mary -was taped. A Professor Longhair album from this same event was issued soon afterwards but the Meters' tape has remained unreleased. However, it's likely to be coming out very soon in the USA and UK.

            Q
Whose voice (and laugh) is clearly and consistently heard in the background throughout the Unplugged recording? Like where Paul says "This one's written by Bill Monroe" and the voice answers "Matt Monro's dad", and where Paul says "This next song is one off an early album of mine called McCartney" and the voice answers "What did you call it that for?"
            Margo Graham, West Davenport, USA

Do you not ken the kindly Scots burr of Mr Hamish Stuart?

            Q
Many years ago I saw a video called Wings Over The World which was very interesting, showing different scenes from Wings' '76 tour, on stage and backstage (like Paul's birthday party). I enjoyed it very much and would like to know if this video is still available. Silvia Marelli, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Unfortunately, Wings Over The World is not available on video - nor, in fact, has it ever been. This entertaining documentary was made for TV, widely shown at the time (beginning Easter 1978) and has since resided quietly in the Paul's archive. (From where, you never know, it may re-surface in our regular film/video column.)

IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION THAT YOU'D LIKE ANSWERED SEND IT ALONG TO CLUB SANDWICH, PO BOX 110, WEST-CLIFF, ESSEX, SSO 8NW, ENGLAND, MARKING YOUR POSTCARD OR ENVELOPE 'WRITE AWAY' IN THE TOP-LEFT CORNER. WE CANNOT RESPOND OUTSIDE OF THIS COLUMN.
