LISTEN TO WHAT THE FANS SAID

            Dear Sue
            Hi! How are you and the gang at MPL? I hope everyone is doing well. I wrote this poem recently, and although it was written with all four Beatles in mind, I thought possibly Club Sandwich may want to use it;

            A Dreamer, A Charmer, A Mystic, A Clown,
            Each one was all four.
With their song they changed our world, shaped our lives.
            In misty dawns of happiness,
In midnights of grief, parts of them are parts of us for all of time.
            One cannot express the unexpressable;
            Rainbows shine We Love You,
Soft winds whisper We Thank You.
            Your music caresses our lives.

Hope you like it. Love to everyone,

            Dear Sue
Another question to animate the discussion about versions of All The Best.
On my LP the song 'Maybe I'm Amazed' is the one from Paul's first LP (by the way the version I like best), but the date on the cover says 1976-the year of release for a live version with Wings (and the only time the song was out as a single!). Now-collector's item for me, or mistake on the cover?
A big praise to your Sandwich, mainly to the Cuff Link - concise information keeps us fully informed about all the details so important for true fans and collectors!
So with best wishes to you all

So, you spotted our deliberate mistake! Good to know someone's on their toes.

            Dear Fun Club
Thinking about Paul's upcoming birthday, I got the idea of re-working the lines of a song from the Sgt. Pepper LP I thought you might get a kick out of it!

When I was younger, learning guitar
            Just to play with friends
Never could've thought I'd see the things I've seen
Or have gone to places I have been.

            Nevertheless, although we got famous
            Here's one thought that sticks:
Who ever thought that I'd still be here rockin'
            Now I'm forty-six!

            Lots of love,

            Dear Paul
This is my first ever letter to you. I am 38 years of age, have been a Fun Club member for years and have a long time enjoyed your truly incredible music. My, how time does fly as I can vividly remember seeing you, John, George, and Ringo in concert in New Orleans way back in 1964!
I do greatly appreciate your honesty and candour when I have heard you discuss your vegetariansim with people of the press. I love your inclusion of animal themes in some of your songs but was wondering about an idea. Why not compose a song espousing your vegetarian beliefs as well as how being a vegetarian can spare the lives of countless animals? Imagine the profound impact such a song could have upon those, like myself, who are considering becoming a vegetarian!
Paul, your beautiful music (aeolian cadences and all - remember that music critic who years ago mentioned that?) has been a great love and joy of my life and whenever I'm having a bad day, I need only to play some of my favourite McCartney tunes to lift my spirits! Below I've listed my favourites - it's soooo difficult to pick and choose as I've so many and that says a lot about how I feel about your music:

  1. Wanderlust
  2. Through Our Love
  3. Mull of Kintyre
  4. Only Love Remains
  5. Pipes of Peace
  6. Tug of War
  7. I'm Carrying
  8. Waterfalls
  9. Another Day
  10. Winter Rose

I have yet to hear 'Once Upon A Long Ago' as it was not released on this side of the Atlantic. It must be incredible from all that I've read about it.
So, thank you, Paul, for sharing with the world your special musical gift and I hope that you shall continue to use that wonderful gift for many years to come!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY (June 18th) and God bless and keep you and your dearest, for as you say "through our love, we can be blessed with a better view".

So far, Paul has found it best to express his vegetarian views in interviews etc., but you never know, they could well crop up in a song one day. After all, his views on racial harmony came out-clearly in 'Ebony And Ivory'.

            Paul!
I say, why not make a classical Schubert-like piece for piano? That'd be "jolly interesting" and I'm quite certain that you would do it as well as the old masters - at least.
As a matter of fact, one can see several similarities between your music and the divine music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It is in both cases the music of a perfectionist.
Another suggestion: I think 'Mull of Kintyre' would sound just great with an African arrangement. It's got that kind of rhythm... it's not that I dislike the bagpipes.

            Yours,

Ian McEwan sees a bit of Schubert in Paul, too, Stina. (See piece on Paul's honorary doctorate). And yes, judging by 'Eleanor's Dream' in Broad Street, he would make pretty good fist of it. Not sure about your last suggestion: next you 'II be suggesting 'Ebony and Ivory' with bouzoukis!

            Hi Paul
My wife and I have been members of your Fun Club for almost a year now and this is my first letter that I am writing to all of you. We just want to say to you first Paul that we admire you more than any other person in the music industry and we have all of your albums and we love each and every one of them. We also have your posters all over my music room.
We really wish you would do another tour in America and if so, please come to Costa Rica so that we can all see you in person. We would pay any price to see you in person.
Well to cut my first letter for now I just want to say THANX! to all of you and keep that music coming!! Take care!

            Love from two devoted fans

            Dear Paul
Hi! I just wanted to let you know that I am absolutely thrilled with your signed book "Paul McCartney, Composer/Artist", and it's something I'll treasure forever!! It's a brilliant book, and I love all the cartoons, and of course all the lyrics and music to those wonderful Beatles/Wings songs! It's an honour to have such a book in my possession, and I'm very happy that the money went to such a good cause, for the sick children.
I've enclosed the article that appeared in the Hackney Gazette. I hope you and your family are all keeping well, and I wish you lots of luck for the future. Once again, I'd just like to say that I think the book is BRILLIANT, and it's certainly something I'll treasure forever!!

            Love and peace,
            JANET BUSELL
            LONDON

The article reveals that Janet paid £120 for the book in a charity auction in aid of the paper's Lifeline fund for sick children at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Hackney, a cause to gladden Paul and Linda's hearts. "It was cheap at the price. Paul has always been a favourite Beatle. I have been a fan for years and saw the Beatles perform in 1966 at the Finsbury Park Astoria. I was in their fan club, and have all their records, as well as some books." Janet herself had been a patient at Queen Elizabeth's, when as a toddler she refused to eat, so she was doubly pleased at her success.

            Dear Paul
You and John have been one of the biggest influences in my life. I'm only 17 years old, but I have been a fan for the past five years (a newcomer, I guess). I own all of your major releases except for a few CD's, and the LP Wings Over America. It's the truth when I say you and John have a big pull in my life.
I'm writing to ask a question I can't recall ever being asked. Do you have a large collection of guitars and bass guitars? I saw in a recent Rolling Stone that you were presented with a left-handed guitar by Les Paul, so maybe one day you could show us Fun Clubbers your guitars. Bye for now.

            Thank you,

            PS Happy late birthday!

We try to show you Paul's armoury in our occasional feature, Guitar Corner, but rounding the instruments up can be tricky! CS43 had a nice little item on Paul's old Hofner violin bass. Dry Prong: that's quite a name for a town.

            Dear Sue and Harry
I am writing to show my appreciation for the superb Club Sandwich 47/48 - it is the best one I have yet seen and it is super to have so many brilliant, colour photos. I already cannot wait for no. 49!
I keep on hearing about Paul's rock 'n roll LP in the USSR and expected you to mention it in the Cuff Link feature (my favourite CS article!), but as a special favour from Paul, will this LP be available to Fun Club members?
The Club's offer scheme is superb, but being a mere schoolboy I cannot afford sweatshirts etc. It would delight me if you produced Paul McC stickers, posters and badges - please consider this!
Finally, tell Paul that none of us can wait for the next LP and singles - please release them this year! It was good to see about the Rupert project - is Paul aiming for its completion by Rupert's 70th birthday in November 1990? This seems the obvious time to target.

            ATB,
            MATTHEW A. JORDAN
            HEATHFIELD
            ROYSTON
            HERTS.

We thought the Russians deserved something exclusive, Matthew, but as Richard Ogden says in our feature on the album, more tracks could well come out on singles. The last offer sheets included a spiffing 'Once Upon A Long Ago' badge, a set of Linda's postcards, a Ram songbook and several back numbers of the Sandwich, all at under £2.00 each, so there should be something for you. Yes, 1990 does seem a good target year for Rupert.

            Dear Paul
            Shalom!
As you see I am an Israelian girl. I'm 18 years old and I am your new fan.
On the 19th of July I'm going to the army. I'm very excited and your wonderful music helps me to cheer up. I also enjoy playing on the piano, yours and the Beatles' songs. I have been playing already for eight years and by your inspiration I started playing the guitar.
But the main reason for this letter is, I'd like to wish you a very happy birthday and lots of success in your future enterprises. You are very popular here in Israel, the country of the sun, and we love you very very much and are waiting impatiently to see you here.
I bought your All The Best record and I enjoy it very much. The new song 'Once Upon A Long Ago' is wonderful and it's good to know that there is a man like you who makes pleasant our time with his wonderful music! I wish you success in the next record.

            Till then,

            Shalom, uleitraot
